A recent study carried out by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) found teachers teaching core subjects like maths, science and languages have a higher rate of leaving the profession. In fact, one in ten leave – especially in the first five years.

This statistic is based on data collected between the period of 2010 to 2015. And the report shows the percentage breakdown of each subject: about 10.4% of science teachers left the profession each year, 10.3% of maths teachers and 10.2% of those teaching languages. The study also found that teachers in those particular subjects were more inclined to move between schools rather than staying in one place.

These results mirror the government’s sentiments. They have expressed concerns that the recruitment and retention of teachers will continue to be ‘a significant challenge’.

So, what does this mean for teachers in core subjects currently seeking roles? There is a shortage of teachers. A fact which any diligent, ambitious, talented teacher can use to their advantage.
